Avian/Bird Flu - A Realistic Perspective

Avian influenza is known to have spread to bird flocks in 8 countries in Asia. A small number of people in Vietnam and Thailand have been infected. People are only at risk if they have close contact with infected chickens or other birds. There is no evidence of human transmission. Proper cooking destroys the virus in eggs and chickens. WHO has not advised against travel to any of the affected countries.

Australia does not have avian flu and its quarantine procedures for animal products are very strict. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Department of Health and Ageing are monitoring the situation very closely.
